Photo © Steven Fruitsmaak / Wikimedia Commons Fraport Greece on Wednesday announced that it was beginning development works at Kos “Hippocrates” International Airport with the reconstruction of the runway and the apron. Due to the works, the operations of the airport will be partially suspended from March 4 to 19. Last year Kos airport saw a 20.7 percent increase in passenger traffic and an overall number of 2.3 million passengers. “The safety of our passengers is a top priority for us, and for this reason, the reconstruction of the runway and apron pavement has been scheduled during the off-season,” Alexander Zinell, Fraport Greece CEO, said. According to Zinell, Kos airport will welcome the 2018 summer season with brand new infrastructure, serving the growing tourism business on the island. Impression of Kos Airport. Fraport Greece’s plans for the development of the airport of Kos also include a new terminal building (of 23,106 m2), a 201 percent increase in the total size of the airport, a new fire station, refurbishment/expansion of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), a 75 percent increase in the number of Check-in Stations (from 16 to 28) and a 125 percent increase in the number of security lanes (from 4 to 9). The airport’s revamp is expected to cost 30.5 million euros, Fraport Greece had announced in December. During the period of the upgrades to the airport, all medical and rescue flights will be continue to be operated by helicopters. Fraport Greece currently manages 14 Greek regional airports in the country. By 2021 the company will have invested a minimum of 330 million euros for development works at the airports.
