An e-ticket system offering admission to a number of Greek museums and archaeological sites will undergo test runs as of May 1, with officials looking to set it into force on June 1, just ahead of the summer tourist season.

The e-ticket is set in June to allow access initially to several archaeological sites surrounding the Acropolis – Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Keramikos, and Hadrian’s Library.

The e-ticket program will later include other highly visited sites throughout the country including Knossos, Messini, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, as well as at the sales points of the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture, later expanding to Delphi, Olympia, Thessaloniki and Ioannina.

The e-ticket application is made possible with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the National Bank of Greece.

The Central Archaeological Council is set in the coming week to finalize the details of the system, which will also include a counting network to collect statistics. The installation of the complete IT system will take place in September.

Greek museums and sites generated approximately 100 million euros in revenue in 2017, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), exceeding initial estimates at 95 million euros.
