Registration for Athens’ largest running event, the “Athens Marathon. The Authentic”, will open on Wednesday April 18, at 4pm, organizer SEGAS (Hellenic Athletics Federation) said on Monday. In its 36th year, the “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” event will take place on Sunday, November 11. The available individual entries for this year’s event are 20 percent of the total entries. According to SEGAS, this year the total number of entries in the shorter distance races of 10km & 5km (morning & afternoon) Road Races will sum up to 26,000 runners, up from 24,500 in the 2017 event. “This number suggests the ultimate registrations limit in these races, in order for the event to be organized as per the high standards of safety and quality that SEGAS applies in all its event,” the organizer said. SEGAS said that the increase in the registration limit of the 5km Afternoon Road Race (8,000 entries instead of 6,500) gives new participation opportunities and leads to a new mass record. “We are getting ready to welcome more than 53,000 runners from all over the world in Athens in 2018,” SEGAS said. Last year’s marathon attracted 51,000 professional and amateur runners. Based on last year’s participation interest, SEGAS expects available entries for the shorter distance races of 10km & 5km to be sold out within a few hours after registration opens.
