The Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH) has taken immediate action to inform its members of the requirements as foreseen by the GDPR privacy law, which comes into force across the EU on Friday, and lays out the conditions under which personal data can be collected and processed.

In this direction, the HCH called an extraordinary meeting of its board of directors this week, who had the chance be informed by the head of Greece’s Data Protection Authority, Konstantinos Menoudakos. The meeting focused on the requirements of the new law and how these will be applied by hotel and campground owners. All HCH members have been issued specific guidelines, fact sheets and examples of GDPR in practice.

“The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is of primary importance for the hotels of our country,” said HCH President Alexandros Vassilikos, adding that the chamber was awaiting the national legal framework in order to safeguard its members.

“As hoteliers it is our obligation to pay due attention to the significant changes brought about by this Europe-wide data protection legislation… as is the protection of the Greek hotel industry in view of the challenges,” he said.

Vassilikos underlined that it is the chamber’s priority to ensure that its members enforce the regulation, adding that a Code of Conduct was currently being drawn up in view of the new legislation.
