Greece’s Public Transport to be Affected by Walkouts, Strikes on May 30

Public transport employees in Athens will hold work stoppages on Wednesday, May 30, as the country’s main private and public sector umbrella unions, GSEE and ADEDY, have announced a nationwide 24-hour strike.

OASA buses, express buses that service the airport, trolleys and the tram will operate only between 9am – 9pm. OASTH bus employees in Thessaloniki will also hold work stoppages from the start of shift until 7.30am and from 9pm to the end of shift.

Employees of the Athens metro and electric railway (ISAP) at the moment have not announced whether or not they will participate in the 24-hour strike or hold work stoppages.

Trains of railway service operator Trainose will also not be running for 24 hours and so there will be no services on the suburban railway (Proastiakos). As a result, metro line 3 (blue line) will operate only until Doukisis Plakendias station. There will be no metro service to Athens International Airport.

Ferry boats in Greece will also not be in service on Wednesday as the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) has announced a 24-hour strike in all ship categories.

Moreover, air traffic controllers have also announced a work stoppage on Wednesday between 10am and 1pm that will lead to flight cancellations and reschedules in all Greek airports. Travellers are advised to contact their travel agents or the airline companies.

Strike action is expected to continue on Thursday, May 31. Trolleys, buses and the express buses that service the airport will go on a 24-hour strike. Also, the Athens metro will be in service only 9am to 9pm. The electric railway and the tram are expected to operate normally.
