Hailed as the “Oscars” of the travel industry, the awards acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. The WTA Europe gala ceremony was recently held at the Zappeion Megaron Hall in Athens. Tinos was awarded for its culture, gastronomy, stunning beaches and unique settlements, but also for its hospitality. “The island’s residents make the travel experience of visitors unique, which is evident in the high occupancy rates for this summer,” the municipality of Tinos said in an announcement, also adding that, the island has been gaining ground in the preferences of travelers even for short holidays throughout the year. Mayor of Tinos Yiannis Siotos and Deputy Mayor Natassa Deligianni. “The award recognizes that Tinos is unique and among the most popular destinations, covering a large part of the international tourism demand, as well as the need for quality vacations,” Tinos Mayor Yiannis Siotos said during the award ceremony. Tinos was nominated for the award along with other popular Aegean islands and destinations on mainland Greece, namely Chania on Crete, Kalymnos, Lesvos, Pelion and Zagori. The World Travel Awards was established in 1993, and each year covers the globe with its Grand Tour – a series of regional gala ceremonies to recognize excellence within each continent. The regional winners will progress to the Grand Final, which will be hosted in Lisbon, Portugal, on December 1, 2018.
