Travelers visiting Greece via road reached 8.3 million in 2017, according to a report released by the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) intelligence body INSETE.

This amounts to more than 30 percent of the total number of tourists to Greece in 2017 (excluding cruise travelers).

The report focuses on six significant markets for Greece – Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania and FYROM – from where most tourists travel to the country by road.

Polish holidaymakers also opt for Greece, however a large number travels by air, while a significant percentage travels by road.

These countries contributed by 13.8 percent to the total number of Greece’s tourism revenues in 2017.

Thrace, Macedonia, the North and South Aegean islands, and the Ionian islands were among the most popular destinations for holidaymakers.

The economic climate had been a major factor in the decision making for the residents of these countries.

According to INSETE, in 2016, Greece was also among the most popular destinations for travelers from the Balkan countries. More specifically, Greece ranked first in the preferences of holidaymakers from Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania and FYROM and second for travelers from Romania.
