Sport events Serifos Gears Up for 6th ‘Sunset Race’ 2018 by GTP editing team 6 July 2018 written by GTP editing team 6 July 2018 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 8 The Cycladic island of Serifos, on September 22 and 23, is expected to host hundreds of professional and amateur athletes, who will compete in the “Serifos Sunset Race 2018″. Organized for the sixth consecutive year, the sports event will include three running races of 5, 10 and 20 kilometers; three swimming races of 750, 1,500 and 3,000 meters, as well as shorter running and swimming routes for kiddies. According to an announcement, the island’s Vagia beach will be the starting point of the 5 and 10km races, providing participants with the opportunity to run next to the sea, towards Ganema beach and the Koutalas bay, while enjoying the unique sunset of Serifos. The 20km route is considered one of the most difficult in Greece. The runners will start from the harbor of Serifos, head towards the areas of Livadi, Kalo Ampeli, Vagia, Ganema and Koutalas, and return to the Vagia beach to cross the finish line. The running races will be held on Saturday, September 22, and the swimming races on Sunday, September 23, in order for the athletes to be able to participate in both events, get a separate classification and special discounts. The three swimming races will be held in the Livadi bay. The Serifos Sunset Race aims to provide the residents of Greek islands – especially remote islands – with access to education, health, culture and sports. Part of the events’ proceeds will be donated for the purchase of sports equipment for the island’s school. The Serifos Sunset Race 2018 is organized in cooperation with the Region of South Aegean, with the support of the Serifos Municipality and local sponsors.
