Ways to tap into the sports tourism market and the ministry’s efforts to secure mass appeal sporting events was the focus of Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development George Tziallas’ address during the 6th Conference on “Development Prospects for Western Greece” held in the port town of Patra last week.

Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development George Tziallas.

Referring to the election last October of Patra to host the 2nd edition of the Mediterranean Beach Games in 2019, Tziallas underlined the significance of sporting events for local communities and the national economy as these pave the way for development and international promotion of Greek destinations.

In this direction, Tziallas said, the ministry had tabled a draft law covering thematic and special interest tourism based on the guidelines of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which was open for public consultation. The 19-article bill defines thematic and special interest tourism by category and outlines the basic principles for sports, recreation and adventure tourism, among others.

Tziallas added that sports can generate considerable interest in Greece, particularly by holidaymakers seeking unique experiences all year round, and referred to the success of the tourism ministry’s promo video featuring Greek NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo
