According to the ministry, for the first time a legal framework is being implemented that foresees the spatial planning of port projects with the aim to lay the groundwork for the sustainable development of maritime tourism and to foster conditions that will attract investments.

The said decrees give the green light to plans for both ports (Chios and Alimos); defines land use; lays out the terms and building restrictions for the erection, extension, conversion or construction of buildings and facilities; approves of the environmental conditions as prescribed by the submitted Environmental Impact Study.

Currently underway, the concession competitions for both marinas are expected to be completed by year’s end.

The marina in Alimos, southern Athens, covers an area of 210,000m2 and currently caters to leisure boats and to the berthing needs (1,110 berthing spots) of the yacht charter market.

Meanwhile, three investment schemes have expressed interest for the right to use and exploit the marina on Chios, which is located some 2.5km from the town and 6km from the airport on the eastern coast of the island. The 80,000m2 harbor will be able following small-scale upgrades to serve at least 170 recreational craft.

The concession period for both marinas is 35 years.
