The 3rd Ierapetra Tourism Festival kicks off on Sunday, September 2, in the Lassithi prefecture of Crete, with a series of events in the run up to World Tourism Day on September 27.

A joint initiative of the Ierapetra Municipality and the Region of Crete, the month-long festival features daily events at city and village locations focusing on local heritage and culture, gastronomy, hospitality, art and music as well as a series of workshops and panel discussions on issues of tourism development, sustainable tourism, Natura2000, and eco-practice.

Parallel events include screenings for the 6th International Ierapetra Documentary Festival, trekking experiences as well as plenty of concerts and dance happenings.

“In recent years, the Ierapetra Municipality has given special emphasis to tourism development and the visibility of our country by organizing not only a celebration that lasts for a few hours but a series of events that run for a whole month and offer Greek and foreign visitors the chance to get to know us even better and to learn more about our culture and natural environment,” said Ierapetra Deputy Mayor for Tourism Argyris Pantazis.

Participants and speakers include local officials, tourism authorities, hoteliers bodies  and professionals including Ierapetra Mayor Theodosis Kalatzakis, Regional Prefect for the Environment Nikos Kalogeris, Crete Tourism Commissioner Michalis Vamiedakis as well as the Crete section of the General Panhellenic Federation of Tourism Enterprises (GEPOET).

The 3rd Ierapetra Tourism Festival comes to a close on September 27, World Tourism Day. Admission to all events is free. More info on the program here.
