Photo Source: AIA Construction works to expand the main terminal of Athens International Airport (AIA) in view of ever growing numbers of travelers are currently under way, according to Greek daily Naftemporiki. The project, awarded to construction firm Aktor, is one of three planned for the airport and was initially budgeted at 31 million euros with the current sum agreed at 18 million euros. The completion date has been set for May 31, 2019. The first scheme paves the way for an even larger expansion of the airport, which is budgeted at some 400 million euros and scheduled to get underway once the airport breaks the 26 million passenger milestone. AIA handled 21.7 million passengers in 2017, with estimates for the even better performance this year. Additional plans, according to reports, include the enlargement of Τerminal 1 and of the non-Schengen area passport control and the construction of a closed parking space beyond the P2 car park. Other projects in the pipeline include the increase in commercial ventures such as restaurants, innovative services and technologies, passenger halls, but as well as an upgrade of the airport’s infrastructure.
