The project includes bringing the port up to date with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), the Schengen Treaty and the relevant European and Greek legislation, aiming to establish the island as a port of call for international cruise ships. Plans include the development of a security center within the port where all safety information is gathered in real time through state-of-the-art equipment. Data collected at the center will be then transferred in real time to the Local Port Authority Enterprise Center through a data base network. Modernization works also include the installation of surveillance cameras, telecommunication equipment, portable fencing, barcode readers, metal detectors, emergency lighting systems and power generators.
