Syros port is set to get a much-needed upgrade in view of the Cycladic island’s increasing needs. The port and municipal authorities signed an agreement in this direction with the concessionaire for the project this week.

Under the South Aegean 2014-2020 operational program, the named concessionaire will be required to proceed with works that will upgrade port facilities and services including its security system.

The project dubbed “Supply & Installation of Syros Port Facility Security Systems” has been budgeted at 1.25 million euros and terms foresee the completion of works within nine months.

The project includes bringing the port up to date with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), the Schengen Treaty and the relevant European and Greek legislation, aiming to establish the island as a port of call for international cruise ships.

Plans include the development of a security center within the port where all safety information is gathered in real time through state-of-the-art equipment. Data collected at the center will be then transferred in real time to the Local Port Authority Enterprise Center through a data base network.

Modernization works also include the installation of surveillance cameras,  telecommunication equipment, portable fencing, barcode readers, metal detectors, emergency lighting systems and power generators.

In efforts to improve the quality of life and safety of island residents as well as create the necessary conditions for Syros to become an attractive and competitive destination, the Municipal Authority said it is preparing to submit to the shipping ministry a master plan for the further enhancement of the port which will include suggested auxiliary use and additional infrastructure, including the operation of the island’s shipyard.
