Greece joins 50 countries in celebrating European Heritage Days 2018 with free admission to the Acropolis Museum on September 29-30, among other sites and to a series of events held countrywide.

A Council of Europe initiative launched in 1985, European Heritage Days are celebrated every September in member countries of the European Cultural Convention attracting over 20 million visitors.

This year, the European Heritage Days celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 under the common theme – ‘The Art of Sharing’.

Also known as Heritage Open Days, museums, monuments and sites, offer visitors and residents in Europe free access in efforts to promote understanding of shared cultural heritage, encourage the active involvement  in safeguarding this heritage for present and future generations, counter racism and xenophobia, and invite Europe to respond to the social, political and economic challenges it faces.

The theme in Greece this year is “POLeIS” – aiming to promote Greek cities and their sites of interest. Besides the Acropolis Museum (open 5pm-8pm), the National Historical Museum will also be open as will museums and sites on Crete, in Thessaloniki, Patra, Trikala, and other regions and cities.

Greece has organized Heritage Open Days at its sites and museums since 1994.

European Heritage Day events are free of charge, as is admission to museums and archaeological sites.
