The Travelife Sustainable Certification system was established in 2007 by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) in efforts to promote sustainable practices in the travel and tourism industry. Within this framework, through a detailed environmental program, Blue Domes has managed to successfully meet the 163 sustainability requirements of Travelife, which focus on the environment and society, and include the reduction of energy and water consumption; waste management; the prosperity of employees; the collaboration with the local community and enterprises; the protection of local traditions and wildlife. “During the last few years, Mitsis Hotels has focused on the development of its environmental consciousness and social responsibility, also adopting an integrated program for saving energy, water and raw materials in order to proceed with works that will benefit the local communities,” CEO Stavros Mitsis said. The resort produces drinkable water through the reverse osmosis method, and recycling plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, soap, cooking oil, lighting bulbs, baterries and electrical appliances. It has also stopped using plastic cups and has replaced plastic straws with the biodegradable variety. Moreover, the hotel holds reforestation activities and cleanup operations in the area’s beaches with the participation of its guests. Blue Domes also supports the local community, children and youngsters with a number of donations and events. Blue Domes is the group’s largest hotel, offering 499 rooms, bungalows, maisonettes, villas and suites. “The group’s aim is for its hotels to receive more sustainable tourism certifications, on top of the existing Green Key and Blue Flag distinctions,” Mitsis Hotels management said in an announcement.
