The fourth season of The Durrells, a popular British comedy-drama TV series based on the autobiographical books of explorer and writer Gerald Durrell, was recently filmed on the Ionian island of Corfu and in its old town – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

All seasons of the series have been filmed on the island, which poses as the Durrell’s family settling on Corfu in 1933. Season four wrapped up filming on October 11, after 33 days.

For the filming of season 4, production selected to shoot at Kontokali, Corfu town, Kouloura, Agios Stefanos, Erimitis, Gastouri, Halikounas, Kouramades and Sinarades, among other locations on the island.

“We have all fallen in love with Corfu for its stunning landscapes, the beauty of the architecture, the friendliness of its people,” said producer Christopher Hall.

The filming crew consisted of 80 Greeks (55 from Corfu and 35 from Athens) and 90 crew members from the UK.

The Durrells began airing in April 2016 on ITV and PBS, among other TV networks around the world.

The fourth series is once again written by BAFTA award nominee Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Reggie Perrin), while the leading roles are played by Josh O’Connor (Lawrence, Les Miserables), Callum Woodhouse (Leslie, Cold Feet), Daisy Waterstone (Margo) and Milo Parker (Gerald, Mr Holmes).

“We were delighted to have had such a strong and productive relationship both with Corfu and crew from Greece. To be able to film in a location so loved by Gerald Durrell and his millions of fans made a huge difference to the success of the show,” said Sally Woodward Gentle, Executive Producer of The Durrells/Sid Gentle Films LTD.

The Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Center supported the production by facilitating the filming permits for the locations of season four.

“Greece has great locations, very experienced technicians, film equipment and great actors but financial incentives are the key to sustaining our industry”, said Kostas Raftopoulos, Line Producer Greece for The Durrrells.
