Regional Governors Greetings 2018 Key Tourism Figures 2018: Rena Dourou, Governor of Attica Region by GTP editing team 1 November 2018 written by GTP editing team 1 November 2018 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 29 Attica is the birthplace of civilisation and offers a number of different experiences to people, whether they are interested in history or in contemporary art. Attica, like Greece as a whole, is a top, special tourist destination of global dimension. However, the enormous potential of Greek tourism remained unexploited during a period in which Greece was dominated by a distortive model of growth resulting in a waste of resources. In the Region of Attica, since our taking of office, we adopted a different approach as to the destination called “Attica”, namely the establishment of a holistic strategy geared to promoting the Region of Attica and encompassing all its 66 municipalities. And we do that by highlighting and making the best of all the elements that this special place has to offer, whilst bringing to light new challenging perspectives. By joining forces with all stakeholders involved. By opting for a multi-faceted strategic approach in line with scientific standards, whilst looking ahead. We therefore highlight Attica as an inclusive, all year round irreplaceable destination worth visiting either for a short or a long stay. [/column] Attica is the birthplace of civilisation and offers a number of different experiences to people, whether they are interested in history or in contemporary art. It is a timeless choice for the visitor who might be interested in gastronomy, environmental revelations, visits on the nearby islands, i.e. maritime tourism, or in professional and conference tourism. In other words, Attica is offered either for well-known or lesser-known, yet authentic experiences. However, when it comes to upgrading the tourist identity of Attica, the challenge takes a variety of forms. In this context, we are participating in international events by strategically addressing markets — objectives, upgrading infrastructures, enriching the cultural map of Attica, for instance, by reopening flagship sites such as the Ancient Theater of Thorikos, thus contributing towards the selection of Elefsina as the European Capital of Culture in 2021. We co-organise every year “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” a top running event. We are present to highlight all facets of Attica, of yesterday and of today. A place that is inextricably linked to the universal values of Democracy, Freedom, Equality. A welcoming and distinct destination that is worth visiting all year round.
