Lloyd’s List Names 15 Greeks Among World’s Top 100 Shipping Giants

Fifteen Greeks are among the world’s leading shipping owners with Greece and China in the lead as countries with the most influential people in shipping, according to Lloyd’s List.

Greece tops China in terms of influence and presence in the Lloyd’s Top 100 with Greek shipowners remaining the strongest force in the global shipping industry, accounting for 14 percent of the 2018 Top 100 spots and demonstrating the sector’s improving performance and importance.

Indicatively, Greek shipowners invested over 10 billion dollars in new orders and in the acquisition of second-hand vessels in the first 10 months of 2018.

Leading the globe’s most powerful shipping tycoons is John Anthony Angelicoussis, owner of Angelicoussis Shipping Group, holding the 6th spot (from 8th last year) on Lloyd’s “One Hundred People 2018” list.

Other Greeks at the top are George J. Prokopiou of  Dynacom Tankers, Sea Traders and Dynagas at 12th (from 15th), and Angeliki Frangou head of Navios Maritime Holdings at 22nd.

Further down on the list are GasLog’s Peter G. Livanos 24th, George Economou of TMS/Dry Ships (25th), Petros Pappas, head of Star Bulk, Greek Shipowners Union President Theodore Veniamis, Kostas Konstantakopoulos of Costamare,  Nikolas Tsakos, founder, president and CEO of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) Limited, and Evangelos Marinakis of Capital Group.

Newcomers from Greece joining the prestigious list are: Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, president of Bimco, Dimitris Fafalios of Intercargo, Libra Group’s George Logothetis, chairman of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ESCA) Panos Laskaridis, and Despina Theodosiou, president of Wista International.

Lloyd’s List goes on to note: “Greek shipowners continue to teach the rest of us how to succeed in the counter-cyclical game.”

The three leading positions on this year’s Lloyds List are held by South Korean Kitack Lim, secretary general of the International Maritime Organization, CEO of AP Møller Holding, Robert Uggla, together with Søren Skou, CEO of AP Moller-Maersk, followed in third spot by Xu Lirong and Li Jianhong, chairmen of China Cosco Shipping Group and China Merchants Group, respectively.
