Athens to Ring in 2019 with Music, Dance and Angels

Athens’ New Years Eve event will kick off at 10pm!

The Municipality of Athens will say “goodbye” to 2018 and welcome the New Year at the Thisio pedestrian walkway with the Parthenon as a backdrop and a special music and dance event inspired by angels.

“We bid farewell to 2018 and welcome the New Year in Thisio with a special audiovisual extravaganza which will transform Athens into a city of, all-time favorites, angels while enlightening not only the sky but our hearts as well,” the municipality said in an announcement.

Hosted by Greek actor Vassilis Charalambopoulos in a surprise appearance, the city’s special New Years Eve event will kick off at 10pm with a special music performance by the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by stilt-walkers and circus entertainers.

Greek actor and singer Christina Maxouri will then take the stage to take guests on a musical journey with special melodies right until the year comes to an end.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis will then make the countdown into 2019 sending wishes of health, happiness and prosperity for the new year.

The first minutes of 2019 will be greeted by acclaimed artist Katerina Kouka and composer Themis Karamouratidis with a musical program that will include classic and modern Greek hits.

The welcoming of the new year will continue with En Lefko 87.7 radio producer Harris Varzbatijan on the decks with unbeatable tunes.

The angels will be “brought” in the city by the artistic group of Yannis Kakleas, Froso Lytra and Manolis Pantelidakis.

The New Years Eve event is part of the Municipality of Athens’ holiday program organized by the City of Athens’ Culture, Youth and Sports Organization (OPANDA) in collaboration with the Athens Technopolis.

Glass House Project: “We play your wish”

In the meantime, sending out a message of hope and compassion, a glass studio at Syntagma Square in central Athens will be hosting popular Greek DJs on Saturday and Sunday who will be playing the songs you choose between noon and 8pm to collect funds and food for the city’s solidarity center which aims to offer support to vulnerable social groups.

Within the Dutch Glasshouse Project, DJs from EnLefko 87.7, Athens Voice Radio 102.5, Pepper 96.6, Kosmos 93.6 and Kiss Fm 92.9 will be performing free of charge.
