South Aegean Islands’ Beauties and Traditions on Show at Athens Airport

Travelers and visitors at Athens International Airport (AIA) on Friday, March 29, will have the opportunity to experience the beauties and traditions of the South Aegean islands during a number of events scheduled to take place within the framework of the airport’s “Fly me to the Moon – Sounds Greek to Me” program.

The South Aegean region is the sixth destination of AIA’s cultural program, which aims to honor Greek destinations by promoting their natural beauties, multicultural identity, gastronomy, customs and distinctive character.

With even more images of Greece, the program continues this Friday with traditional music and dances, arts and flavors of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.

More specifically, between noon and 4pm, at the Departures Level (Entrance 3 – All Users Area), travelers and airport visitors will be able to experience Tinos’ art of marble sculpture.

Members of the South Aegean Dance Club will also be there to set the rhythm in the sound of the area’s music, dressed in traditional costumes.

Furthermore, travelers and visitors will have the chance to listen to the traditional distinctive sound of the “santouri”, a percussion-stringed instrument of the hammered dulcimer family.

In addition, the Museum of Marble Crafts of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, will hold a marble craft workshop, while chef Argyro Barbarigou, the Ambassador of the South Aegean Region for the “European Region of Gastronomy 2019”, will highlight the area’s culinary “treasures” and local products.

Since July 2018, the airport’s “Fly me to the moon” program has been promoting the natural beauties of Greece; the country’s cultural identity, gastronomy, customs, traditions, and the special character of each region.
