History War Museum Opens on Zakynthos

The “History War Museum Anastasios Liaskos” on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, recently held its official opening ceremony in the presence of state and local officials.

Operating since 2018 in the premises of the Galaxy Beach Rersort in Laganas, the museum offers valuable information on Greece’s history and involvement in major armed conflicts of the 20^th century.

Created by former Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Tourism, Anastasios Liaskos, the museum features a rich collection of weapons and personal items, as well as recreated historic scenes, through which war events come to life.

According to Christina Tetradis, owner of the Galaxy Beach Resort and vice president of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, the aim of the museum is to connect tourism and culture with history.  “[The museum] offers a true reflection of what we call ‘thematic tourism’. It is a one-of-a-kind museum, featuring 3D scenes of the events, enabling guests to ‘live’ the experience,” she said.

“Apart from the sea and sun product, Greek tourism must constantly create new thematic dimensions, aligned with global market trends in order to offer more reasons [for travelers] to visit the destination; extend the tourism season; and attract quality, high-income tourists,” said Tetradis, who is also the spouse of the museum’s founder Anastasios Liaskos.

The museum revives modern and contemporary history, through the recreation of war scenes from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Furthermore, the galleries and exhibits display scenes from the troops’ preparation; battles and in-between breaks, using authentic uniforms and ammunition, vehicles and rare devices.

A periodical exhibition of antiques and documents from the 1821 Greek War of Independence is also on display.

The museum gives a historic narrative of the war period, bringing history to life for educational purposes, aiming to cultivate peace in the minds of visitors and especially young people.

The Museum is open daily for hotel guests, visitors, tourist groups and students, from 10am to 2.30pm and from 6pm to 9.30pm.
