Acropolis, Athens

The Greek culture ministry announced last week that repair works on the lightning conductor system of the Acropolis would begin immediately after a series of inspections were carried out last week in the aftermath of an accident.

Earlier this month, authorities shut down the world famous site after a lightning strike injured four people.

On April 17, two visitors and two guards were slightly injured when a lightning conductor stationed near the Parthenon absorbed a powerful bolt which shattered glass windows and caused damage to a nearby ticket center.

An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Acropolis attracts millions of visitors each year. The culture ministry said buildings on the Acropolis hill, one of the highest points in Athens, suffered no damage, but investigations were underway into the causes of the incident.

The injured have been discharged from hospital.
