Destinations news Dozens of Greek Municipalities Secure WiFi4EU Funding by GTP editing team 17 May 2019 written by GTP editing team 17 May 2019 1 comment Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 16 More than 200 municipalities across Greece have secured a total of 3 million euros for the implementation of wireless broadband infrastructure (WiFi) provided through the EU’s ongoing WiFi4EU initiative. Each municipality is set to receive a WiFi4EU voucher of 15,000 euros to finance Wi-Fi equipment and its installation in public spaces. Since the launch of the program, more than 200 Greek municipalities have applied – 117 out of 2,800 in Europe in the first call and 90 out of 3,400 Europe-wide in the second. Municipalities that have not yet applied for the WiFi4EU program will be able to do so on the WiFi4EU.eu web portal during a new round announced by the Commission. The EU initiative foresees that upon receiving the voucher, municipalities will have to offer secure Wi-Fi services, free-of-charge and without adverts, for at least three years. More than 10,000 municipalities from 30 EU countries have registered so far. To ensure a balanced geographical distribution among member states, each country will obtain a minimum of 15 and maximum of 95 vouchers per round. There will be a total of five calls published until 2020. Follow GTP Headlines on Google News to keep up to date with all the latest on tourism and travel in Greece.
