The Greek port of Lavrio and the Turkish town of Cesme will get their own ferry service next month, Aegean Seaways announced this week.

The initial plan was for services to kick off on June 2, but procedural delays at the ports have put back the date.

Aegean Seaways will run the direct seven-hour journey – expected to slash travel times between Europe and Turkey – on a 191-meter ferry constructed in 1989. The ship will depart at 10pm from Cesme and reach Lavrio at 6am the next day, departing from Lavrio on the same day at 10pm and reaching Cesme at 6am the next day.

The highly anticipated service is expected to create the conditions for new developments in the area of transportation for the two countries, reduce traffic at the border ports and strengthen trade ties.

Representing Turkey’s Aegean Seaways in Greece is Piraeus-based shipping and freight transport company Stefmar Ltd, headed by Stefanos Karakanis.
