Photo: GTP The Greek island of Santorini has been voted “Best Island in Europe” by the readers of US magazine Global Traveler, a monthly travel publication aimed at frequent business and luxury travelers. Besides Santorini, Mykonos and Crete also made it into the top 10 island destinations clinching the 3rd and 8th spots respectively. Completing the list were Ireland (2nd), Sicily (4th), England (5th), Capri (6th), Elba (7th), Sardinia (9th) and Jersey, UK (10th). Santorini retains the “Best Island in Europe” title for the sixth consecutive year. Greece also stood out in the magazine’s 7th annual Leisure Lifestyle Awards this week, which honor the best in leisure and lifestyle travel, awarding goods, services, destinations, hotels, airlines and cruises. Greece was ranked 8th in the “International Best Historical Attractions” category and 7th with Mykonos in the “Best Beaches” category. In the meantime, the international spotlight has recently focused on Greece’s luxury travel offerings. Earlier this month, luxury travel network Virtuoso ranked Greece fifth in its Top 10 list as one of the world’s leading destinations for summer 2019 based on future bookings. Santorini island. Photo © Maria Theofanopoulou Keeping the promotion of Greece’s luxury tourism product high on the agenda, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) recently said it would be participating at the Cannes International Luxury Tourism Exhibition (ILTM Cannes) in December, and for the first time in ILTM China – International Luxury Travel Market in Shanghai this fall, while organizing events promoting luxury travel to Greece through its branches worldwide.
