The 93-room luxury unit, budgeted at 10 million euros, is located minutes away from major Athens landmarks including the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the Plaka borough and the Irodion Theater, in the hip Koukaki neighborhood. The hotel, named Athens BC due to the ancient finds uncovered on the property (purchased in 2016) during construction works on the high-rise building, has received culture ministry approval under a 10-term agreement to showcase these in specially designed constructions. It should be noted that earlier this year, the construction of the hotel together with a second multi-storey building in the immediate surrounding area of the Acropolis, spurred a strong reaction from residents and heritage organizations, which claimed the buildings were in violation of zoning laws as these were located within the archaeological area of the Acropolis, and that once completed would block the view to the world famous UNESCO heritage site. Although the environment and culture ministries later suspended all building activity in the area, the project was completed. Coco-Mat Athens BC Hotel. Besides its now four Athens hotels (Acropolis, Kifissia, Kolonaki and Melissia), Coco-Mat operates eco residences on the island of Serifos and has plans to expand to lesser-known destinations across Greece with tourism projects.
