Creta Maris Beach Resort Holds Biodiversity Week on Crete

On occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Green Team of the Creta Maris Beach Resort recently held its Biodiversity Week event, aiming to inform the resort’s guests about its multi-level initiatives for the protection of the environment and the “We do local” certification.

The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness on biodiversity issues.

Creta Maris’ Biodiversity Week began with a guided tour in the resort’s gardens, where guests had the opportunity to see and smell the flavors of rare Cretan herbs, as well as receive information on their significance for the life of Cretans from the period of the rise of the Minoan civilization until today.

The resort’s guests were also informed about Creta Maris’ initiatives for the protection of stray animals, which include the creation of stray cat care facilities, and the resort’s participation in a sterilization program, implemented in cooperation with the Dutch non-profit organization “Animals in Distress Foundation”.

Creta Maris’ Biodiversity Week also included cheese making.

Before the end of its Biodiversity Week, the resort held its traditional sheep shearing event, which takes place every year on Crete to protect the animals from the heat of the summer.

Organized for the eighth year, this unique custom, has evolved into a significant celebration, that is inextricably connected with farm life on Crete.

The event offered Creta Maris’ guests the chance to live like locals and learn more on Cretan customs and tradition.
