More than 40,000 visitors to Thessaloniki had the chance to learn more about the city’s tourist attractions through the Tourist Information Centers (TIC) set up a year ago.

Thessaloniki, northern Greece

A joint initiative of the municipality and the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau (TCB), with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the info centers are manned by specially trained teams offering guidance on everything from the city’s main sites and best beaches to eating out and transportation – in 11 languages.

In the meantime, the TCB is gathering visitor data which will be used to improved the northern port city’s tourism performance.

According to the data collected via the city’s info centers so far, August and September marked the largest number of visitors at 5,700 and 5,500, respectively.

Travelers from 121 different countries, including Costa Rica and Madagascar, sought advice at the info desks with the majority of visitors to Thessaloniki coming from central and southern European countries, mainly from Germany, Greece, France, Israel and Russia.

“A great challenge for all of us at the TCB is ensuring the seamless operation of the info centers as the number of visitors served every day deems these necessary. In addition, the info desks offer services that greatly upgrade the city’s overall tourist product,” said TCB President Yiannis Aslanis.

The Thessaloniki Tourist Information Centers are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm in the summer, from 10am to 6pm in the winter and all year round on weekends from 10am to 6pm.
