Photo Source: Athens & Epidaurus Festival / Haris Bilios Theatrical performances by Greek and foreign artists, music concerts, opera tributes and contemporary dance shows are among the events included in this year’s diverse program of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2019. Photo Source: @Athens & Epidaurus Festival Running since the end of May and until early August, the festival’s events are taking place at the Athens Festival venue at Piraeus 260, the Herod Atticus Odeon and the Megaron –Athens Concert Hall, among many other locations around Attica. The festival is also featuring the “Opening to the city” section, which was launched in 2017 to stage performances in various neighborhoods of Athens and Piraeus, including outdoor areas and archaeological sites. “The Athens & Epidaurus Festival is the greatest and most prominent cultural festival in Greece. And if you’re lucky enough to be visiting Attica this summer, be sure to attend at least one of its performances for a truly unforgettable experience,” the Region of Attica said in an announcement. Photo Source: Athens & Epidaurus Festival Prominent international artists will perform this year in Attica, including US director Robert Wilson, Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski, Greek-British actress Kathryn Hunter, as well as the oldest active theater company in the world, “Comédie-Française”, directed by the internationally acclaimed avant-garde director Ivo Van Hove. The audience will also have the opportunity to enjoy famous orchestras from all over the world such as the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg; the Wiener Symphoniker, under the baton of conductor and soloist Leonidas Kavakos; the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra of the Ravenna Festival; the China National Symphony Orchestra; as well as major soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma performing Bach’s six suites for cello. This year’s festival also features the Greek National Opera in “Norma” and “La Traviata”. Furthermore, Athens will also see renowned contemporary artists and music bands performing at the Herod Atticus Odeon including Jethro Tull, Dead can Dance, Loreena Mc Kennit and Tindersticks.
