Photo Source: Ministry of Culture EU grants have been secured for the restoration and preservation of three major sites of cultural importance in the Central Greece Region, the Culture Ministry recently announced. Photo Source: Ministry of Culture More specifically, 4.8 billion euros in funding from the EU’s National Strategic Reference Framework 2014-2020 (known as the ESPA program) will be allocated to the interventions at the site of Orchomenos (2 million euros) to include the restoration of the ancient theater and the creation of an archaeological park, the permanent exhibition at the Arethousa Archaeological Museum in Halkida, (1.2 million euros) which is housed in an old distillery, and the restoration of the Annunciation Cathedral in Amfissa (1.6 million euros). Other projects include archaeological interventions and the restoration of mosaics at churches and chapels in the region. Photo Source: Ministry of Culture All of the above sites, contemporary or ancient, have been deemed of significant cultural importance for the region, with upgrades aiming to increase the number of visitors and boost local economies.
