A total of 11 NGOs and Blue Flag operators from Greece, Cyprus, France, Malta, Italy, Montenegro, Israel, Spain and Turkey among other Mediterranean countries, participated in the annual cleanup events, which were held in early July. The organizations joined the initiative under the slogan, “Caring for the sea that unites us”. The Astir Odysseus Resort & Spa, a five-star seaside hotel that cares for the maritime environment of Kos, undertook an active role during the ‘Blue Flag Mediterranean Week’, which is coordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. The resort’s staff cleaned the neighboring shore by removing plastic and other kinds of waste with the help of the hotel’s little guests. The children along with their parents were also informed about the threat of marine pollution, the effects of plastic waste on the food chain and the protection of marine species. Covering an area of 100 stremmas (24.7 acres), Astir Odysseus Kos offers 337 rooms of a total of 1,000 beds. The luxury resort offers many dining options, wellness and sport facilities, while its premises are surrounded by 14,779 trees and plants.
