Arrivals and overnight stays in hotels and tourist campsites in Greece were on the up in 2018, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Tuesday. According to the final data for the January-December 2018 period, Greece last year saw arrivals to hotels and campsites up by 4.7 percent to over 22.3 million (from 21.3 million in 2017), while overnight stays increased by 2.6 percent to over 91,5 million (from 89.2 million in 2017). Non-residents lead 2018 arrivals/overnight stays in Greece ELSTAT’s data showed that last year, compared with 2017, an increase of 8.0 percent and 4.1 percent was recorded in arrivals and in nights spent by non residents, respectively and a decrease of 3.3 percent and 5.3 percent in arrivals and nights spent by residents, respectively. The annual occupancy rate of the bed-places in hotels and similar establishments (excluding tourist campsites) amounted to 52.7 percent in 2018, compared with 51.9 percent in 2017. Moreover, 85.3 percent of the arrivals and 92.2 percent of the nights spent in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites in Greece, were recorded during the April-October period. In regards to the breakdown of the survey data by region, an increase was observed in arrivals and nights spent, in absolute values, on Crete (9.2% in arrivals and 2.5% in nights spent), in South Aegean destinations (7.5 percent in arrivals and 5.3 percent in nights spent) and in Attica (3.9 percent in arrivals and 3.0 percent in nights spent). The largest contribution to Greece’s arrivals and nights spent in 2018 was recorded from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Poland. Russians and Americans also contributed in the increase of arrivals and nights spent in Greece.
