Greece’s Museums, Archaeological Sites See More Visitors in April

Visitors to Greek museums in April increased by 21.8 percent, leading to a 19.9 percent increase in revenue from receipts compared with the same month in 2018, according to data released recently by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). At the same time, the number of free admission visitors in April increased by 25 percent.

The most popular and most visited museums in April were the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

Likewise, archaeological sites in Greece in April saw a 19.4 percent increase in visitor numbers and a 18.4 percent increase in revenue from receipts. An increase of 24.8 percent was observed in the number of free admission visitors to archaeological sites during that month.

In April, the archaeological sites that attracted the majority of visitors were the Acropolis of Athens, Knossos and the Acropolis of Mycenae.

During the four-month period from January to April 2019, an increase of 9.2 percent was observed in the number of visitors of museums and a 16.1 percent increase in the relevant receipts, compared with the corresponding period of 2018. An increase of 5.9 percent was recorded in the number of free admission visitors.

Regarding the country’s archaeological sites, during the first four months of the year, an increase of 10.3 percent was recorded in the number of visitors and a 14.4 percent increase in the relevant receipts, compared with the corresponding period of 2018. Free admission visitors were up by 11.1 percent during that month.

ELSTAT’s survey collects data from the Archaeological Receipts Fund (ARF) of the Culture Ministry concerning the number of visitors and the receipts from the tickets sold in the museums and archaeological sites of Greece.
