Creta Maris Holds ‘Traditional Harvest Day’ for 7th Year in a Row

The Creta Maris Beach Resort, located in Hersonissos on Crete, recently held its “Traditional Harvest Day”, an annual event which aims to introduce its guests and employees to the island’s long tradition in grape growing and winemaking.

The resort held the event for the seventh consecutive year within the framework of the “We do local” initiative and the “TUI cares for Crete: First Steps Towards a Sustainable Food Destination 2017-2019” program.

During the event, the guests and employees of Creta Maris visited the resort’s vineyard and had the chance to participate in the harvest process.

The grapes were transferred to the winepress in the traditional way – by donkey – for the production of the grape must. Following the distillation process the “raki” traditional alcoholic drink was produced, as well as the grape must jelly.

All activities were accompanied by music, dancing, and delicacies, features of the Cretan hospitality.

“The guests’ participation in the harvest process was significant and gave them valuable information on the Cretan lifestyle,” the resort said in an announcement.

“We do local” is a project first launched in 2014 by local entrepreneurs on the island of Crete, in cooperation with certification control body Cosmocert and Local Food Experts. Its aim is to offer a diversified tourism product that promotes Greek customs and supports local cuisine and producers.

The Creta Maris Beach Resort is owned by the Metaxa Hospitality Group and has been operating since 1975.
