The company tabled an offer of 103 million euros plus value-added tax down from the initial 136.2 million plus VAT. Other groups that had initially expressed interest participated in the competition but did not submit bids. The company has 34 months to complete the works from the contract finalization date (expected in fall) with operations slated for mid-2022. The creation of a new cruise terminal, which was approved in July, is part of a series of binding investments to be implemented by Piraeus Port Authority manager Cosco. Earlier this week, Greek Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis expressed his satisfaction with a new updated master plan for the development of Piraeus Port. Cosco is committing to modernization works worth 800 million euros – up from the initial 612 million euros – aiming to establish the port as one of Europe’s top three in terms of container handling capacity. With the terminal expansion, Piraeus port will also be able to handle the world’s largest cruise ships as well as four next-generation liners over 400 meters each. The Piraeus Port Authority is aiming with this project to become a leading Mediterranean cruise homeport attracting an additional 580,000 cruise passengers.
