Titled “Travel and Tourism at a Tipping Point”, the biennial report ranks Greece 25th with an overall score of 4.5, measuring factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector, contributing to the development and competitiveness of a country. Greece dropped a slot since 2017, when the last report was released. Spain is in the lead again (since 2015), followed by France, Germany, Japan and the United States in the top five world’s most travel-ready nations with a scores of 5.4 and the US with 5.3. In the Europe-Eurasia ranking, Greece is 15th with a score of 4.5 against 5.4 held by Spain in the leading position. For its travel & tourism policy and enabling conditions, and infrastructure, Greece ranks 26th; 25th for natural and cultural resources; 13th for health & hygiene; 13th for prioritization of travel & tourism; 32nd for international openness; 37th for environmental sustainability; 18th for air transport infrastructure; 49th for ground and port infrastructure; 18th for tourist service infrastructure; 45th for natural resources; 21st for cultural resources and business travel. Mykonos Island © Maria Theofanopoulou On a less positive note, Greece is ranked 119th for business environment, 61st for safety and security, 59th for human resources and labor market, 51st for ICT readiness, 111th for price competitiveness, 58th in terms of enabling the environment, and 51st for ICT readiness. “As international connectedness continues to rise, we see travel and tourism competitiveness continue to grow,” says Christoph Wolff, head of mobility at World Economic Forum. “Increased tourism is bringing great benefits to many economies but must be managed properly by both policymakers and businesses for a sustainable future.” To view the T&T Competitiveness Index 2019 Rankings press here.
