Creta Maris Beach Resort Introduces its Sustainability Practices to Students

The Creta Maris Beach Resort, located near Heraklion on Crete, recently welcomed 50 students of the city’s 3rd Lyceum for its “2019 Open School Days”. The event focused on introducing the resort’s sustainability practices and Zero Waste policy.

During the event, Creta Maris presented its sustainable waste management program, which is now running for a third year.

The students had the opportunity to visit its garden, learn more on the Cretan herbs and flora and the methods for their cultivation.

Creta Maris held a tour around its specially designed recycling and composting facility, which has been developed under its Zero Waste policy. The students received information about the process of collecting, separating and pressing waste, and the recycling process.

The students also visited Creta Maris’ organic field where they had the chance to learn about the methods of managing horticultural waste, the process of composting and the benefits for the hotel and the environment.

“Sustainable development is the driving force behind Creta Maris’ operation. Aiming to ensure the protection of the natural environment, the resort has minimized its environmental footprint, by adopting an integrated sustainability program that is based on international best practices,” Creta Maris’ management said.

A member of the Metaxa Hospitality Group, the Creta Maris Beach Resort has been operating since 1975. Its “Open School Days” initiative was part of its sustainability program and aimed to enhance the students’ sense of responsibility for the protection of the environment.

“The resort wishes to encourage young people create a more sustainable future by helping them understand the impact of their consumer habits on the environment,” the resort’s management added.
