Danish tourists consider Greece as an ideal travel destination

Greece has become one of the favourite travel destinations for Danes. As a Scandinavian country with challenging weather, we love going abroad to destinations that are more exotic, warm and relaxing – all of which you can find in Greece.

Tourism plays a significant role in the Greek economy as it accounts for over 20% of its GDP. Greek tourism is increasing and among 250.000 – 350.000 Danes travel to Greece on a yearly basis.

People tend to travel in the high season, mid-June until mid-August; however, Danes also travel to Greece in May and October.

Some of the most popular destinations for Danes are Crete, more specifically the Chania-area, Rhodes, Kos, Corfu, Lefkada, Samos and Skiathos. Even though the Greek islands are amazing, the mainland has its charm as well. Therefore, you will also find Danes in Parga, Peloponnese and other parts of the mainland.

Danes are in love with the Greek weather, the mild climate, the clean and transparent water, which you can enjoy in several places, both on the mainland and on the islands, but indeed also with the Greek people.

The Danish tourists really enjoy visiting Greece because of the friendliness and openness of the Greeks, the Greek food, small tavernas, the splendid wine, ouzo and let us not forget the historical and cultural richness of Greece. Danes love exploring different cultures and see archaeological sites.

Besides Danish tourists, several Danish artists, scientists, and students visit Greece to work and study and while they are here, they often stay at the Danish Institute in Athens.

Furthermore, approximately 600 high school students visit Greece on a yearly basis, most of whom in Athens. The Danish Embassy and the Danish Institute give lectures to the high school students regarding Greek history, culture, politics, and economics.

In Denmark, Spies, TUI, Apollo, and Bravo Tours are some of the most popular Danish tour operators in Greece.

It is announced that in April 2020, the airline company SAS will open two new routes. These will go directly from the second biggest city, Aarhus, in Denmark to Rhodes and Chania.

This emphasizes the increased demand in Denmark for going to Greece.
