Theoharis met with Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis in Athens this week, and agreed to work together towards channelling knowhow and ministry support into upgrade projects and actions that will create value added for the island’s tourist product. Noting that the development of special interest tourism is a basic component of the ministry’s long-term strategy, Theoharis said the focus should be on tapping into theme tourism, an area which he believes, Crete has great potential to develop. In relevant news, the Crete regional authority announced this week that it would be granting an additional 15 million euros to newly set-up small and medium-sized tourism ventures on the island. In the last year, the region has allocated a total of 28 million euros – from the Crete Operational Program 2014-2020 – to investment projects aimed at upgrading the tourism services and products offered.
