Athens News Lycabettus Hill Upgrade to Create Athens Oasis by GTP editing team 19 November 2019 written by GTP editing team 19 November 2019 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 16 Lycabettus Hill, in the heart of Athens, is set to undergo enhancement works set to be completed in 18 months’ time as part of an ongoing drive for the overhaul of the Greek capital, according to the Municipality of Athens. Budgeted at 1.5 million euros, the project will include the implementation of innovative pilot programs, anti-flooding works with the use of sustainable materials, road improvements, and walkway upgrades. Earlier this year, the Attica Region and the culture ministry had announced revamp plans budgeted at 1.98 million euros for the historic Lykavittos open-air theater atop Lycabettus Hill, which would include structural reinforcements, seating replacement, power and lighting installations. Source: Visit Greece According to Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, the aim is to make Lycabettus Hill an exemplary landmark of Athens, make it safer for visitors and residents, an attraction and recreation space. Bakoyannis is expected to request that the Public Properties Company (ETAD) hand over jurisdiction of a 3.5-hectare area of the hill so that the upgrade will be complete. “Our goal is to give the citizens of Athens, but also all its visitors, a living and recreational space,” said Bakoyannis, adding that once completed the project will be a beautiful urban forest for Athens and Attica”.
