Photo Source: cineuropa.org/ Athens is nominated for the European Film Location Award 2019, an annual competition organized by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) and Cineuropa. EUFCN consists of 90 members from 30 countries, which aim to promote European locations as filming destinations. This year, each EUFCN member proposed a location featured in a film, TV series or documentary, released between January 2018 and July 2019. The Greek capital was selected by the Hellenic Film Commission for being among the shooting locations of “The Little Drummer Girl”, the BBC TV series directed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook. “The Little Drummer Girl”. Photo Source: cineuropa.org/ “Athens has been nominated by the Hellenic Film Commission in recognition of the key role it played in the highly popular mini TV series,“ the Commission said on social media. A six-part series, The Little Drummer Girl is based on John le Carré’s best-selling espionage masterpiece and produced by The Ink Factory, AMC and BBC. “Combined with the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, and Elefsina standing for Lebanon, Athens and its surroundings offered a canvas of unique resonance to director Park Chan-wook for ‘The Little Drummer Girl'”. The other shortlisted locations for the European Film Location Award 2019 are Vilnius, Lithuania; “Delphi” Theater; Germany; Dorfulija, North Macedonia; El Hierro, Spain; Luggala, Ireland; Lviv, Ukraine; Rocca Guidoensca di Rocchettine, Italy; Royal Brussels, Belgium and Završje-Piemonte d’Istria, Croatia. The voting procedure is now open and the deadline is on December 30. The Cineuropa voting platform is available in English, Spanish, Italian and French. Votes for Athens can be submitted by filling the online form here. Voters will also participate in a draw to win a two-night stay for two persons in the winning location. Greece was the winner of last year’s competition with the Ionian island of Corfu receiving the European Film Location Award 2018 as the setting of “The Durrells” TV series.
