Despite increasing investment activity in new technologies, Greece ranks last within EU-28 when it comes to market penetration as well as user skills and literacy, according to the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises’ (SEV) Digital Maturity Index released recently.

Carried out by SEV’s Digital Transformation Observatory in collaboration with Deloitte, the debut report, which examined 100 indicators in the areas of business technology, connectivity infrastructure, policies and regulation, digital skills, digital business maturity, digital society maturity and digital public sector maturity, ranked Greece 28th, behind Bulgaria and Romania, in terms of digital technology integration rates.Denmark is in the lead with a score of 6.5, above the EU average of 5.2, compared to a score of 3.7 for Greece.

According to SEV analysts, this makes Greece the least prepared country to enter Industry 4.0. – a subset of the so-called 4th Industrial Revolution.

A closer look reveals a slow rate of digital integration for businesses, with Greece ranking 26th in this index. At the same time, information and communication technologies (ICT) in public administration (25th) need urgent upgrades or replacement.

According to the study’s analysts, recent changes to legislation are ambitious, but speed of implementation is vital if Greece wants to move up the list as a more advanced digital society.

Interestingly, Greece ranks 11th in the EU for private sector investments in ICT and 7th for public sector activity.

The final results of the study will be presented at SEV’s Athens convention in late December.
