On the back of a call by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) for a commitment by the industry to climate neutrality by 2050, EU leaders are expected to meet in Brussels on December 12-13 to agree to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by that date.

The Brussels summit will aim to endorse the objective of achieving a climate-neutral EU by 2050.

Travel and tourism generates 5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

During the COP25 UN climate summit in Madrid, this week, WTTC reiterated its commitment to the global fight against climate change through its “Climate & Environment Action Plan: S0AR”, which will include a set of targets, energy efficiency measures, and initiatives to reduce the use of plastics, food waste and others.

The WTTC is making efforts to unify the travel and tourism sector and make it part of the solution.

“As the leaders within the travel and tourism industry, we have the power to drive real change and are committed to this issue,” said Gloria Guevara, WTTC president and CEO.

In the meantime, WTTC recognizes companies taking proactive action in this direction through its “Sustainable Travel & Tourism Partner” program.

Current targets set for the European Union include cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
