A multipurpose tourism and cultural complex budgeted at 117 million euros is set to upgrade the industrial neighbourhood of Eleonas, located between Athens and Piraeus. The project, to go up on a 70,000-square meter industrial plot on Pireos St, will be carried out by Greek company Viohalco. The investment was given the green light last week by Enterprise Greece, the country’s investment agency, and will be used to host cultural, tourist, conference, medical and trade activities. Viohalco’s plans based on a study carried out by ARIS Architects SA foresees the creation of two hotels, a museum, a technological research and development center, as well as a 30,000m2 park complete with playgrounds, recreational and sports facilities sports, pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, and food services. According to Kathimerini daily, tourism infrastructure will account for 45 percent of the total land construction. The urban redevelopment of Eleonas is a government priority aiming to drive growth and expand the Attica Region’s offerings. Last year, the authorities announced plans to launch a tender for the construction and management of an intercity bus (KTEL) depot in Eleonas, expected to handle over 12 million passengers annually.
