Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni visited a number of sites across Greece, last week, in order to be informed of the progress being made on restoration and upgrade works. Mendoni, accompanied by a team of archaeologists and experts, visited the Museum of Vergina in Macedonia, the Folk Art and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace, the Old Metropolis dedicated to Saint Paul in the town of Veria, the Amphipolis site, and the Monastery of St John the Baptist (Timiou Prodromou) in Serres, where she was informed by local expert teams of the progress, the allocation of funds, the problems, and the deadlines. According to the ministry, the new Archaeological Museum of Vergina is scheduled to open in the spring of 2021. The minaret of the early 11th-century Byzantine basilica in Veria is set to undergo restoration works in 2020, and the transport of findings from excavation points at the Amphipolis site to the museum will be completed in the coming month.
