Two decades after its launch and 5 million visitors later, the Attica Zoological Park announced this week the expansion of activities to include the construction of a hotel, a waterpark, and an aquarium by 2022.

The plan was announced by Jean-Jacques Lesueur, the founder of the park, who said the company would be investing some 13.5 million euros in the projects aiming to further stimulate development in the eastern Attica region of Spata.

“For 20 years we have been a main attraction for families. With this in mind, we are taking our next steps to make the area, in combination with neighboring shopping malls, a major attraction for the country’s residents and visitors, and especially for families with young children,” said Lesueur.

A key project is the construction of Hotel Βοtanico, a 60-room boutique hotel dedicated to butterflies. The 1.5-million-euro investment will open in 2021 and will mainly be targeted at families but also Greek and foreign visitors wishing to be near the airport.

A second project set to open in May 2020 is the Aquapolis waterpark, to be implemented in collaboration with Polin Waterparks. The 3.5-million-euro investment consists of 17 animal-themed water slides, a restaurant, cafes and shops, with the potential to entertain 150,000 visitors on an annual basis.

And a third project involves the creation of the Oceanopolis aquarium set to open in 2022. Budgeted at 5.5 million euros, the aquarium is aimed becoming a main attraction for families boosting family tourism options in Attica.

Other Attica Zoological Park investments include the creation of a dinosaur museum budgeted at 2.5 million euros and slated to open next year.
