Greece ranks 11th on the list, which includes Thailand, Macau, and Portugal in the top three spots. Source: fDi The fDi Tourism Locations of the Future 2019/20 ranking is based on data collected for 51 locations where at least 10 percent of GDP is generated by tourism receipts and/or at least 10 percent of all FDI projects are in the tourism cluster. The ranking also recognizes advancements in activity tourism (Azerbaijan and Costa Rica), academic tourism (Kharkiv, Ukraine), cultural/heritage (Herzegovina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kaunas, Lithuania, Turkestan, Kazakhstan, and Zvernec, Albania), cruise & yacht (Grenada, Seychelles), eco tourism (Australia and Dominica), gaming (Macau), gastronomic (Azerbaijan), high-end (Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos Islands), medical tourism (Cyprus and Lebanon), MICE (Costa Rica, Kharkiv, Ukraine, Valle del Cauca, and Colombia), wellness (Australia, Azerbaijan, Dominica, and Iceland), and regional tourism (Australia). Greece received a mention under the sports tourism category with regards to the creation in 2019 with Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt, Bulgaria and Portugal, of the International Sports and Tourism Organisation to promote peace and prosperity through sports and tourism. Fdi bespoke awards are given for administrative reforms, climate resilient strategy, connectivity, corporate social responsibility, cconomic impact, education and training. The report also identified Herzegovina as a “hidden gem” and Albania’s Palasë. Other factors taken into consideration included hotels development and investment, improved access, incentives, infrastructure upgrades, mega investments, and overcoming seasonality. Turkestan was named up-and-coming destination of the year.
