According to reports, Hanks was granted honorary citizenship for his charitable work and philhellenism. Hanks, who is married to actress Rita Wilson (of Greek descent), holidays often in Greece and mainly on the Cycladic island of Antiparos, where the the couple own a summer house. For some 20 years Antiparos has been the famous couple’s “getaway retreat”, away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.
