2020 Year in Review

The year 2020 will be known as the time when everything changed.

Marked by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, 2020 will forever be remembered as the year when millions of people globally died, entire countries shut down, social isolation was introduced and millions of businesses and families faced financial catastrophe.

The travel and tourism sector took a sharp hit from Covid-19 with unprecedented travel restrictions introduced worldwide. Sector professionals are calling for international travel to restart now to save itself, millions of jobs in the sector and beyond, and the global economy. Calculations by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) refer to a staggering 174 million global travel and tourism jobs threatened. The UNWTO sees the year 2020 going down in history as the worst year on record for global tourism with international arrivals expected to reach 1990 levels.

GTP Headlines takes a look back at what happened in 2020 – a year that initially started off for Greece with the best of estimates in terms of tourist arrivals and revenue before Covid-19 changed it all.
