Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis on Monday announced that a steering committee will soon be established to oversee the actions of the upcoming national strategic tourism plan.

“Once the consultation process is complete, we will proceed swiftly to implement the project’s actions,” the minister said in an interview on Greek radio station Alpha 989.

The steering (advisory) committee will be made up of high level stakeholders and experts who will provide guidance on key tourism issues.

During the interview, Minister Theoharis referred to the recent launch of Greece’s new promotional and advertising campaign on January 15, noting that it was the first time the country’s campaign was ever launched so early in the year.

“This was a request of many tourism professionals,” he noted.

When asked on the new markets Greece is aiming to attract, the minister referred to China, India and Saudi Arabia. “These markets bring in tourists that are big spenders, but we are also looking towards the United States and Europe, who can offer us even more,” the minister said.

According to Theoharis, messages for the 2020 Greek tourism season from the markets where the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has offices are also positive.

“The messages are cautiously optimistic, and we believe that with coordinated and cautious actions we can boost the increase in the quality of tourist flow and revenue we had last year,” he said.
